Fairview Dermatology would like to remind you that it is very important to do monthly self-exams and yearly skin examinations with a dermatologist. Skin cancer is on the rise and there is no reliable cure for melanoma. Here are a few tips to assist you with doing a self-skin exam. Just remember A, B, C, D, E: Asymmetry- imagine if you would fold your mole in half, it should be similar on both sides. Border- the outer border of your moles should be smooth. Irregular or poorly defined borders are concerning. Color-your mole should be similar in color throughout, moles very dark in color or that are two or more different colors could be concerning. Diameter- moles larger than the size of a pencil eraser may be concerning. Evolving- if you notice that a mole is growing or changing rapidly, you should have it evaluated by a dermatologist.
